Why are The Simpsons an American Icon?

Simpsons FAQ | 2.10.2010 3:00 | 2 Comments

I have to give a speech tomorrow about The Simpsons and why they are an American Icon. I know that they represent the average american family and all, but is there anything else? I don’t really know how to phrase it. Thanks!

Homer Simpson represents the typical American father and husband as anti-hero. He makes a lot of mistakes as a character and is no ways perfect, in fact being very much the opposite of perfect in an exaggerated way. He gains the status of icon not through being heroic, but by being fallible and vulnerable to external problems. The rise of the anti-hero in American society was a twentieth century phenomenon. When people watched television in the fifties there was an Ozzie and Harriet ideal that wasn’t really reflected in society, and this and other circumstances led to the formation of a new culture in the mid twentieth century which particularly valued the fallible or human hero, or anti-hero, as a sort of shock to the system

simpsons is the 1st show of its kind 2 poke fun @ real world events, pop culture & classism while showcasing the role of all ppl in the world (foreigners, rich, poor, criminals, kids, adults, ederly, drs, drunks, whores, teachers, gays, religious figures, law enforcement etc) its pokes fun & shows the role of everyone and represents the opinion of the masses in a humorous way vs insulting. used 2 insight lots of thought, the 1st cartoon 4 adults, disguised as a reg cartoon, longest running show in history. look @ all the spin-offs, south park plays on stupidity of ppl, family guy plays on the self-involved ignorant family & neighbor aspect, family guy plays on the pokes @ world events & pop culture…simpsons was ground breaking as the only one 2 do all 3 and appeal to the masses. no one else can say they’ve done that, and be the 1st
