Were The Characters In The Simpsons Really ...

I mean, many of the popular characters had their first appearance in an episode where it was written by someone else (so, not Matt Groening).
So were they all created by him, or some/many of them were created by The Simpsons writers?

Matt created the Simpsons and even named the characters after his own family except he named himself Bart. James Brooks only ask him to pitch an idea for a show and now both are considered developers of the show with Sam Simon. I started watching the Simpson shorts when I would watch the Tracey Ullman show which was so cool back in 1987. Never missed an episode.
happy new year.
