So what state do The Simpsons live in?

Simpsons FAQ | 9.05.2011 3:00 | 4 Comments

I heard that there’s a Springfield in every state so that’s why they chose it, I have always loved and loyally watched the Simpsons, and have always tried to figure it out. All I’ve gotten over the years is that it’s probably in the east coast or Illinois. What do you think?

It doesn’t have a real state, and the fact that it has no state is nothing more than a running gag. Springfield is more like “Anytown, USA”. It’s as if all of America was compressed into a single town, or a single state. Springfield is everywhere and nowhere.

They intentionally never say the name of the state, because Springfield is such a common place name, that you can imagine that the Simpsons live in YOUR state.

There are obvious references to Oregon, since that’s where Matt Groening grew up (and watched a famous clown named Rusty Nails host a kid’s show), but for the most part they keep it intentionally vague.

There are something like 152 springfields in the US. Though they never say it, there are actually a lot of hints. I’ve never sat and figured it out or heard it, but I think it would be pretty easy.
Think of all the times they say something like “the simpsons are going to washington” or “the simpsons are going to texas”, which means they can’t live in those states….. It has to be somewhere that it snows, so it can’t be california or florida or any of those. There are also hints like, in one episode, just as they are leaving sprinfield there is a sign saying something like 3000 miles to disney (land or world, can’t remember), so that means it has to be in a state thats not within that circle. I’m also pretty sure they don’t live on a coast (not sure about that).. They also mention laws sometimes like “that hasn’t been legal in this state sine 1902″ And there are many other hints as well.. Just keep a book and write down all the hints you hear and it shouldn’t take long to figure out, even if it takes some elimination.
