Is Family Guy A Brilliant, Funny Show Or Just ...

Simpsons FAQ | 12.01.2010 22:57 | 22 Comments

I like the show myself. In my opinion like the Simpsons and even South Park it receives criticism because people think the creators are infallible people.
Anybody seen the Simpsons episode which features Peter Griffin as a clone.
Merely to last for 7 seasons plus, let alone maintain its quality, is an unbelievable achievement.

This is sure to get me flamed, but I think South Park was right about family guy being written by manatees. It’s an unoriginal clone, not only of the simpsons, but of other cartoons as well. It also suffers from constant flashbacks, pointless shock humor, and interchangable jokes.
Did you know that Stewie is a blatant ripoff of a character named Jimmy Corrigan? He was drawn by cartoonist Chris ware, and was created eight years before Family Guy premiered. Jimmy came first, and he looks the same, speaks the same, he even invents things. And he’s afraid of his mother to boot. Coincidence? I think not.
Also, Family Guy has blatantly stolen jokes from the simpsons. Just thought I’d throw that out there.
Sure, the whole “animated sitcom” premise is older than dirt, but the Simpsons took that idea and did original things with it. They were genuinely satirical, funny, and critical of society and american culture. Family Guy copies the Simpsons without really understanding what makes it funny.
Personally, I also the find the animation stiff and rigid. Why do all of the characters stand straight up in all of Seth MacFarlane’s cartoons? They hardly ever move around and actually do things.
But I’m rambling. Long story short, Family Guy steals. The end.
: )
Edit: I will concede however, that the Simpsons aren’t as funny as they used to be. I dont’ think kids today are old enough to get most of the jokes in the older episodes, which is sad.
The Simpsons (up to Season 8) were absolute genius, and I shudder to think that a whole generation of kids will grow up with Peter Griffin thinking that the Simpsons stole everything from Family Guy…
And since I like you all on Yahoo Answers so much, I’ll leave you with this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JhD91dD8…

If Family Guy is a Simpsons rip-off, then is the Simpsons a Flintstones or Jetsons rip-off? All four are half hour animated series about semi-dysfunctional but loving families. The boob husband/father has been a TV staple for a long, long time.
Family Guy has a totally different brand of humour. The Simpson’s never has the sheer absurdism of Family Guy, but Family Guy never has the high-culture satire of the Simpsons. For example
Marge: You said you liked Rashomon?
Homer: That’s not how I remember it.
Obviously to understand this joke one has to be familiar with a classic Japanese film from 1950. Family Guy on the other hand would never go that high road, instead it has a would be novelist heavy-drinking dog. However if that kind of absurdism is an inherently a low form of humour, then why do we like everything from Samuel Beckett to Monty Python so much?

Yeah I have.
Family Guy is different from The Simpsons and South Park.
Yes, they are all Animated Satircal Shows but here’s the differences
Simpsons: Dark Humor, Social Satire, Slapstick
South Park: Dark Humor, Social, Political, Dark, and Controversal Satire
Family Guy: Dark Humor, Surreal Satire, Anti-Humor, Deadpan
No seriously, Anti-Humor is a type of humor
It’s where you set up the joke or gag but you kill the punchline and ruin the joke purpisely. Andy Koffman was one of the originators of Anti-humor you know.
I personally am not a fan of Family Guy, Anti-Humor and Deadpan isn’t my type of humor

There is a LOT of difference between The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park. The Simpsons is a family orientated show for a start with strong morale values and narrative. Now… South Park and Family Guy are more insane, eccentric parodies of modern society where the creators are obviously extremely pessimistic. South Park is probably the most genius in my honest opinion, loved it for years. I don’t think it’s fair to call it a rip-off of The Simpsons, it’s simply untrue.

Family Guy isn’t a rip-off of the simpsons. Well, some plots are similar but the over-all humor is different. I don’t like the new Simpsons I actually prefer the older episodes. Seasons 3-8 were the best, full of classic episodes. And I think Family is pretty funny even though it does have a lot of flash backs. Last week’s episode was hilarious although I think last night’s was horrible. I was getting sick of “The Bird is the word”.

Family Guy, to me, is a copy of the Simpsons. Yes, I know there are differences, but some of the features are too close for comfort. Eg the fat, stupid patriarch of the family, the wife who’s a nag and ‘hot’, the misunderstood daughter and the son (Chris is an idiot but Bart’s cool) and the babies. (although they’re quite different as well). I think Family Guy used to be good, however, but now they’re just cranking out more flashbacks and irrelevant pop culture references. To each their own, however.

I don’t know exactly what you’re saying but I can tell you that Family Guy is beyond brilliant. Anyone that would get the idea that it’s a Simpsons knock off is an idiot. Family Guy has it’s own original and genius jokes and bits. So no it’s not a rip-off it’s simply an awesome show that’s better than the recent Simpsons episodes.

I think both Simpsons and Family Guy lost its quality. The only show that keeps me laughing is South Park. Family Guy was good until they started the new episodes and they changed the personalities of the characters sooooo much from season 1-3. Meg is now the family loser, stewie barely wants to conquer the world, peter is more ignorant, and lois is a sexual addict.

I like the show too. I am a big fan of all three. Simpsons of course will always hold a special place in the world of cartoons….
Anyway for your answer watch South Park episode Cartoon Wars!
Rolls all three into one. I think you may like it!

I don’t understand what you are trying to ask, but I can say that Family guy is much more funnier than the Simpsons. Family guy is funny in all episodes, unlike the simpsons.

family guy contains much more adult content, where as some episodes of the simpsons are great for the family. they are both great though!!

i wouldnt say its a ripoff. the simpsons and familyguy are rivals when it comes to adult cartoons. the only difference isthat family guy paradies tv scripts while simpsons focus on famous literature

I’d probably find Family Guy funny if I hadn’t watched the Simpsons, It’s not funny to me ’cause I’ve seen all the jokes before.

The Simpsons is just plain awesome. Family Guy makes me want to put a pencil through my eye; it tries too hard and comes off not funny.
