it is kind of sexist, but the lovable oaf is a widely used stock character. i believe this was in response to the “father-knows-best” character that was prevalent for decades, who was usually paired with a dotty wife for comic effect. in order to be less offensive to women, the lovable oaf or bumbling dad was created. i don’t think writers believe that men are stupid in real life, but that their target audience will find it funny to see the “head of the house” taken down a few pegs.

They don’t start off stupid; At least Homer didn’t. Homer was made stupid by drugs and other crap I have no space listing. Raymond met Debra in college,became a very successful sports journalist. But like all comedy he has to deal with his very inconsiderate family who will not give him one inch of privacy. It is clear that mom wants her two sons to remain single under her roof for whatever sick reason. If you look at different comedies,you will also find stupid women like Peg and Kelly Bundy,Peggy Hill is another retard. Edith Bunkle and I’m sure there’s tons of others. The fact that there’s a back story to every character and not just random stupidity is what makes them believable and easy to relate to. We all know that George Carlin never took a bath in the Hudson(if he did,that explains a lot)but what I guess I want to say is that it is make believe. And you should ask yourself what a world without comedy would be like.

Men became the brunt of jokes once the feminist movement came along in the 70s. Reader Digest republished an article about this many years ago. The talked about sitcoms and commercials and how suddenly women were off limits when it came to playing the fool but men were the new dingbats, wanting little more than watching sports, and with the intellect of an ape.

Either the shows are created by a woman to show they are of a higher intelligence, or it is a statement of the obvious, ALL American men ARE stupid.
